Dr. David Oslin is being honored in Category 4: Using Innovative Technologies to Deliver Simple, Seamless, and Secure Services for advancing innovative technologies that help VA clinicians identify and support Veterans at risk of suicide. Through VA’s Mission Daybreak program, Dr. Oslin is supporting two pioneering initiatives, NeuroFlow and Behavidence, that use digital tools, automation, and data to strengthen mental health care and enable earlier intervention.

Through the NeuroFlow pilot, Dr. Oslin helped modernize manual mental health assessment processes by supporting the development of automated, clinician-centered workflows integrated with VA’s electronic health record system. To date, 13 mental health assessments have been digitized, and automated features now send assessments to Veterans and upload results directly into the EHR, reducing documentation burden and allowing clinicians to focus more time on patient care. Through the Behavidence pilot, he is leading a first-of-its-kind VA study exploring whether passive smartphone data can identify changes associated with depression, suicidal ideation, and PTSD before a Veteran reaches a crisis point.

More than 250 Veterans are enrolled in the Behavidence study, while NeuroFlow’s automated capabilities have already supported thousands of mental health assessments. If successfully validated and expanded, these technologies could help VA clinicians nationwide identify Veterans who may need support sooner and intervene more effectively. By combining clinical expertise with emerging technology, Dr. Oslin is helping build a more proactive, efficient, and responsive approach to Veteran mental health and suicide prevention.
