The U.S. Department of State’s Overseas Citizen Services (OCS) is being recognized in Category 1: Building a Customer Focused Culture for its outstanding commitment to protecting and assisting U.S. citizens abroad.
Operating within the Bureau of Consular Affairs, OCS plays a critical role in safeguarding the well being of Americans traveling, working, or living overseas. From routine consular services to complex, life saving interventions, OCS provides responsive, compassionate, and often heroic support in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
The directorate’s achievements are far reaching. OCS coordinates emergency assistance during medical crises, arrests, deaths, and natural disasters. It supports victims of crime and international terrorism through initiatives such as the International Terrorism Victim Expense Reimbursement Program, addresses cases of international parental child abduction and missing persons, and leads evacuations while providing safety guidance during conflicts in Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sudan, and Israel. In addition, OCS acts as a critical liaison between U.S. based service providers and American embassies and consulates overseas, ensuring seamless communication and support.
Through these efforts, OCS ensures that U.S. citizens receive timely, trusted, and effective assistance during moments of crisis, no matter where they are in the world. Its dedication reflects the highest ideals of public service and reinforces the government’s unwavering commitment to its citizens beyond national borders.
