The FERC Data Governance Division (DGD) Team is being honored in Category 3: Using Innovation, Data, and Breaking Down Organizational Barriers for transforming Data.FERC.gov from an innovative concept into a modern, publicly accessible platform that strengthens transparency and access to federal energy data. Through cross-agency collaboration, human-centered design, and disciplined execution, the team created a centralized digital destination that makes complex information about U.S. energy markets, infrastructure, and regulatory activities easier for the public to find, understand, and use.
After delivering a proof of concept ahead of schedule in September 2024, the team rapidly developed the infrastructure, security, storage, user experience, and data documentation needed to launch the platform. DGD partnered across FERC program offices to conduct extensive testing and gather stakeholder feedback, continuously refining the experience around user needs. The resulting platform provides open, machine-readable datasets alongside intuitive tools that allow users of varying technical abilities to search, filter, export, and analyze information without navigating multiple disconnected systems.
Data.FERC.gov has created a more transparent, efficient, and data-driven relationship between FERC and the public. By consolidating information into a single reliable platform, the team has reduced barriers to federal energy data and empowered researchers, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and citizens to make more informed decisions. The platform also reduces ad hoc data requests for FERC employees and uses analytics to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Through innovation and collaboration, the DGD Team has established a sustainable foundation for greater transparency, operational efficiency, and public trust.
