The Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) View My Audit Status (VMAS) team is being honored in Category 4: Using Innovative Technologies to Deliver Simple, Seamless, and Secure Services for transforming how taxpayers access information and navigate the audit process. Launched in June 2024 and informed by direct taxpayer feedback, VMAS provides a secure, digital self-service experience that gives taxpayers greater transparency and control during what can be a complex process.

Through VMAS, taxpayers can access real-time audit information, including whether an audit is open or closed, recent correspondence, confirmation that documents were received, response deadlines, and next steps. By making this information available online, the IRS reduced the need for taxpayers to call for routine status updates while helping them stay informed and respond to audit requirements more confidently.

Since launch, VMAS has served more than 1.3 million unique users and generated nearly 2 million page views. The tool also eliminated the Fast Track Line, which previously accounted for 26.3% of RCEO call volume, allowing Tax Examiners to dedicate more time to complex calls and casework. These improvements contributed to reducing audit cycle time from 254 days in FY2023 to 233 days in FY2024. By combining secure self-service, real-time information, and human-centered design, the VMAS team has created a more transparent and efficient audit experience for taxpayers while improving employee productivity.
